How Do You Differentiate Window Mullions and Muntins?

Several years ago, windows required mullions and muntins for stability. Today, these window features no longer serve any function, but they can still be added to your windows for aesthetic effect. Furthermore, mullions and muntins are generally referred to as grilles nowadays. However, it still pays to know the difference between mullions and muntins in case your design professional or window contractor still uses the original terms.

Keep reading to learn more about the difference between mullions and muntins.

Mullions vs. Muntins

In old English homes, mullions split large window frames vertically to separate each side of a single window, making it look like there are two windows instead of one. They provide structural support and are usually made of heavier material.

Muntins, on the other hand, are also vertical dividers and serve as structural support for the windows. However, they are only applicable to the inner vertical bars or outer materials. Muntins can also be used to refer to the dividers in wood panels, doors and furniture.

When Did Mullions and Muntins Become Obsolete?

The invention of tempered glass made weak window panes or window glass that easily crack a thing of the past – and along with these outdated glass materials, mullions and muntins became obsolete, too. Tempered glass can do without any vertical or horizontal support, and it doesn’t break as easily as its older counterparts. Recently, mullions and muntins have made a comeback solely as an aesthetic feature.

Alternatives to Traditional Mullions and Muntins

Today, mullions and muntins go by a different name – grilles. Grilles can be made of wood, steel, vinyl or composite materials. They no longer serve a functional purpose, but if you have a historic home, adding mullions and muntins could still be a relevant addition.
